Magnolia stellata rosea - Pink Star Magnolia
Magnolia stellata rosea is one of the early bloomers in our garden. The profusion of two-tone pink flowers on a tree with no leaves brings a bit of spring to the middle of the winter in our climate. Magnolia stellata rosea grows upright, generally twice as tall as wide. After 15 years in the ground ours is keeping pace at 15 feet tall. The Pink Star Magnolia is more upright than the species and tends to bloom a few weeks earlier. Both the pink and white varieties are slow growing trees. Magnolia stellata rosea prefers great soil and requires drainage. A lawn planting could be difficult. I planted Magnolia stellata rosea on a mound in my garden because the groundwater is so shallow during the Winter. Magnolia stellata rosea blooms before it produces any leaves.
